When to seek emergency dental care

Some dental problems can wait for a routine appointment, while others need prompt attention. Please contact us as soon as possible if you experience:

• Severe or persistent toothache
• A knocked-out, loose or displaced adult tooth
• A chipped, cracked or broken tooth
• A lost or damaged filling, crown or veneer
• Swelling, an abscess or other signs of infection
• Bleeding or an injury to the mouth that does not settle

Please note: if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling that is spreading towards your eye or neck, or bleeding you cannot control after an injury, this is a medical emergency. Call 999 or go to your nearest A&E.

How we can help

Our first priority is to ease your pain and find the cause of the problem. Depending on what we find, treatment may include a temporary or permanent filling, re-cementing a crown, draining and treating an infection, root canal treatment, repairing a damaged tooth or, where a tooth cannot be saved, a gentle extraction. We will always explain your options and the likely cost before going ahead, so you can decide what is right for you. Where further or specialist treatment is needed, we will arrange the appropriate care.

What to do before your appointment

While you wait to be seen, a few simple steps can help:

• Toothache: rinse with warm salty water and take ordinary pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, following the instructions on the packet.
• Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown, not the root. If you can, gently place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in milk and contact us straight away — acting quickly gives the best chance of saving it.
• Broken tooth: keep any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and avoid chewing on that side.
• Bleeding: apply firm pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for around ten minutes.

Out-of-hours care

If you need urgent advice when the practice is closed, NHS 111 can assess your symptoms and direct you to the most appropriate care. For life-threatening symptoms, always call 999.
